SKY WAY RAILING is too low not enough to stop a vehicle from falling. Social Media opinion by Eireen Diokno-Bernardo

SKY WAY RAILING is too low not enough to stop a vehicle from falling. In fact looking at the animation of the accident, any false impact on the railing would even aggravated a fall. It cant absorb an impact, the height of it is not enough. Even at 60km per hour, the velocity of any moving object can tilt and the railing at that height could even serve as a ramp for a buss, a van, a trooper, a fortune to capsize.

Six times we had similar accident since 2006, among these times who ever below  as a commuter would also die when something fall from the skyway. Something is wrong with the engineering of the skype way.

CHECK IT OUT by now it is obvious it is not safe using the south luzon express highway and sky way stretch from Gil Puyat Avenue(C-3 Road) to the Alabang-Zapote Road (AH-26) all through Sucat, Parañaque, down to Muntinlupa. I am afraid.

Two public buses, two vans, one trooper, one fortuner, all are vehicle that has the height of 6ft above. A public bus in the Philippines average height is 10 feet, so  we only have 2 to 3 feet of railing given to a bus.  I am no engineer, but it is basic to give more than 50% proportion in height for an energy of impact to be absorb and create a possible stop. If it is just 2 feet of wall as railing under a 1.7 feet of a bus wheel, instead as a stopper the concrete railing will only serve as a ramp that will send any vehicle with enough speed flying.

It is like that the sky way is not design for buses.  In other countries public buses are only allowed in main thoroughfare. I do not understand why basic safety feature as in height of a protective railing for a 10ft vehicle will be left out by Engineers of DMCI Construction.  I suspect  the engineer of the South Luzon Sky Way is clueless  and  not intending the sky way for buses.
Since 2006, from the last 74 months, an average of one 2 ton vehicle, very 12 months is falling from the sky. To my friends living south of NCR, please be very careful cruising these roads.   I do not know how you can be careful because you can never know when an accident will happen but perhaps being under the slab roads  of the sky way instead of the expose portion of the underpass  will lessen the risk of being smash by a falling bus, hopefully it wil do good.

On my FB personal account, natutuwa lang ako to include it here at my personal blog.  I would like to illustrate how interactive social media is.

  • Edison Victorino yes totoo mababa un railing... kapag asa bus ka kitang kita mo, nakakatakot!

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo Dalawang bus, dalawang van, isang trooper, isang fortuner, all are vehicle that has the height of 6ft above. A bus average height is 10 feet so parang 2 to 3 feet lang ang railing given to a bus. I am no engineer, pero it is basic to give more than 50% proportion for an energy of impact to be absorb. Pag 2 feet of wall as railing lang under a wheel it will serve as a ramp that will send any vehicle with enough speed flying.

Mga kaibigan ko from the south please ingat kayo passing through sky way and going under it.

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo Mukha naman maluko iyong bus driver nitong accident na ito, sa CCTV nag overtake sa maliit na car yata, baka nag-e-e-skid dahil madulas ang daan, pero the sky way structure should anticipate that, may isa or dalawang dadaan sa sky way na maluko, or mag o-over speed in wet road, the railing should be design to stop MALOKO na DRIVER.

  • Philip See nothing can stop a run away bus, high railings are meant as a bump stop and not a fence to stop a car from flying over it

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo Philip See I beg to disagree ha, anything that is in front of you, if it is big enough can stop you from moving forward. I am no engineer, but it is basic to give more than 50% proportion in height for an energy of impact to be absorb and create a possible stop. My point- If the railing is just 2 feet of wall under a 1.7 feet of a bus wheel, instead as a stopper the concrete railing will only serve as a ramp that will send any vehicle with enough speed flying. A railing is a fence it has the same function it is to prevent a cross-over. PEACE .
  • Philip See skyway was build base on international standard (pertaining to the railings as well). Talk to a civil engineer and maybe that will enlighten your knowledge on what is the proper height and why it was made that way, many layman do not understand and will never CONSIDER why it has to be at that height. Plus it cannot be a solid concrete block as the railings were also meant to absorb impact shock. just sharing but up to you if you cannot accept the reality of road and bridge rails engineering design. Go around the world and maybe you will be enlighten further.

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo I have pass and drive through several bridges and sky ways in New York, Washington, Los Angles, San Francisco, even some parts of Asia. I have attached as an example NYC Hudson Bridge which will show a good height of railing estimate, close to 20 feet total, I have personally and pass through this and other bridges and hi-ways of Hudson. I remember clearly it is more or less 5 feet.

Picture

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo This is Brooklyn Bridge which again I have personally pass through., the function is similar to a sky way. The railings is also extended close to 20 feet estimate base on pic.

Eireen Diokno Bernardo San Mateo Bridge similar to our sky way. It is a hi-way connecting Bay Area and San Francisco the middle embankment is concert, more or less 4 feet and 5 feet to the left as railing. My favorite hiway in California.

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo And yes let us check our own sky way, compere that center concert embankment in prospective I believe that is just 1 feet.

Eireen Diokno Bernardo This is a sky way going to San Francisco Airport the most similar construction I have drive and pass through. It has very low railing, estimate 2 feet, and the curves are even 5 to 10 degree titled. But I do not see any 10 feet public bus cruising this bridge/sky way.

  • Philip See a concrete block at a height higher than what it is can be a death wish, here in NY we have all kinds of bridge you want to imagine and yet buses and trucks have no problem with it

  • Philip See take the i10 and you will see several rails and barriers, wish you can find one that pleases your wanting for the height, wish you can find one.
    December 18 at 4:35pm · Like

  • Philip See as per your photo non of the rails are higher than what you wish it to be, cause the higher the barrier the deadlier it becomes when in time of an incident, i keep my peace if you refuse to accept the scientific and engineering basis ofr why barriers cannot be higher than what it is. good luck and hope if one of those high rails and barriers should be build i hope no one gets into an accident cause it will put all those layman knowledge to shame

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo Well in the Philippines in the last 74 months we have close to 30 fatalities, 6 vehicle has fallen from the sky way, another 3 to 4 vehicle was unfortunate wreck underneath because of the fall who is either on the skyway or below it. With that it will already tell you something is truly wrong. And if that is international standard then I guess an enlightenment for civil engineers is needed at this point.

  • Philip See Are you a qualified or knowledgeable civil work and road safety engineer or a doctor of physics ? just curious cause it seems you've got lots of idea over road safety. (no malice meant just seriously curious cause me as a qualified automotive and physics specialist could not see why higher wall will help in such accident (except for the falling off the bridge) a runaway bus is a runaway bus.

  • Eireen Diokno Bernardo No I am disqualify as a civil engineer and I am not trying be one. But I am qualify as a keen observer ( I guess) specially when it comes with the anatomy of an accident. I will be bragging if I will enumerate forensic background for graphics and animation/ GCI skills., modesty aside no intention to make myself appear all knowing with the accident being discussed. I was not there. Thank you for the healthy discussion, I enjoyed it Philip See. You are also right about concert barrier in the middle of the hiway. That is also a big good luck for any crazy motorist.
